Between Wabe And Waken started as a poem formatted as a dictionary page. The first step was to list situations that I felt were inelegantly described. I then began to build these new words that are not available in the English language by researching root words in latin, old english/french/german, etcetera. The poem is linked through narrative example sentences. Viewers are invited to take leaflets.
I believe that when we further develop our language we change the way we talk about art and subsequently the way we make art.
Materials:
Inkjet and coffe-dyed printed leaflets, tool box, spindles, drafting tools, twine, dictionary, glass beaker, upholstery nails, moose tooth, pulleys, stereograph slides, cigar box, satin lined case, glass eye, bird mandible, cicada molt, needle thread with artists' hair.
This was the final piece I made during my undergraduate career, I suppose you could say it was an experiment in failure.

The original text was written in French. For a long time I've been fascinated with language barriers and I wanted to access my own limitations and give up control as far as language was concerned to compose this surreal, disjointed piece of writing. This piece was in constant conflict with itself. The poem is written on a banner, presenting it as something that is meant to be read. Conversely it is written in an illegible font I have been developing, turning into the mere image of text as one might receive the sound of a language they do not understand. Conversely still I presented alongside the translation. I've long debated this step in presenting the piece and every time have succumb to my attachment to this beautiful, sub-conscious, and meaningless accident; an attitude I hold toward a lot of my work.
The piece was on display in the Archer Ballroom. The piece was meant to confront shortcomings in communication, ironically this made the piece became particularly difficult to discuss.
